Circa 1870 Transitional Velocipede with Sprung Seat
Sold
Possibly made by Meyer
Highly unusual early transitional bicycle.
Saddle sprung via coil spring over steering head. The spring and top washer is a later addition.
40” driving wheel with V rim and tensioned spokes.
Two rear mounting steps and rear wheel brake.
Incorrect rear wheel from a later ordinary bicycle.
Possibly non original handlebars.
There are a number of elements that lead me to believe it has a connection with Meyer.
The one existing original pedal is of the type made by Meyer.
The crank is of Meyer type including the ball end used to fit it to the front axle.
The front hub is bronze and like Meyer and it has tension spoked which Meyer favoured after introducing these to bicycles in 1868.
Further research would hopefully give a better understanding of this rare sprung seat bicycle.
